Hi, I'm Tom. I’m an animator and motion designer, with over 2 years of industry experience using Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator and Cinema 4D.

Over the last 10+ years, I’ve been chipping away at the programs that forefront the digital industry. Learning plenty in the process, I can’t get enough of it, and there’s always more to learn. That’s why I love working with clients in all industries and can’t wait to get my teeth stuck into a hearty brief or challenging project.

Based in Sheffield for the past 4 years, I’ve had the chance to meet and work with some great people on some brilliant projects. Studying Digital Media Production at Sheffield Hallam University has amplified this massively; it’s allowed me to develop my style and techniques that I use and evolve with each project I work on.

While working with the guys at Grizzle, I've been lucky enough to work on a huge range of projects for various clients, from small businesses to big corporations like Football Manager (SEGA) and The Champions League. From February to March/April 2019, I worked alongside an external Marketing Consultant to implement and test various social media marketing ideas for Grizzle. After this, we reviewed the growth from these marketing efforts and the areas that worked well will be developed. I'll continue to progress with each idea and analyse their effectiveness for the foreseeable future.

DigiMixer is a networking and social event currently aimed at individuals enrolled on creative courses at Sheffield Hallam University. The organisation of the event involves venue planning, scheduling, guest/speaker communication, activity development and networking opportunity planning.

For this exciting university project, we had to plan and market a networking event - SHU Pathways - in which companies and individuals from the media industry could show students what they do, how they work and even offer both part-time and graduate opportunities to those with interests that align with their work. All second-year students on my Digital Media Production course took part in the event organisation, and we all pooled our skillsets into six main teams: Web, Graphic Design/Print, Photography, Social Media, Videography, and Live Production. I took a lead role on the web team and delegated tasks to my other team members. As the lead web developer, I continuously updated and maintained the website (http://shupathways.co.uk) on the run up to the event on the 6th March 2019. Having little time between being given the project brief and the day of the event, I made the call to utilise a simple mockup allowing me to start filling the site with confirmed event details such as the schedule, the attendees and the past event information. I customised this template greatly, adding various functions such as image optimisation, self-hosted elements, and SEO/site speed improvements. I worked closely with the client, Philo Holland, on the project, allowing me to quickly add updates and ensure the client was happy with all aspects of the site. I found that this was a great way to ensure everything was as it should be and developing this way is definitely something I'll continue to do in the future. The event went really well, and the website was very successful in its purpose. The client and everyone who gave feedback on the site said that it looked really professional and functioned as it should; overall everyone was happy. All other teams also produced great content and the client described it as the best Pathways event that has ever been held, which was a great result. For another team-based project, we worked with Trevor, the owner of Vintage Leather Bags (https://www.vintageleatherbags.net/). As the owner wanted to bring more traffic from social media channels, rather than just the current word-of-mouth exposure, I focused on developing and promoting an Instagram page for the business. In our plan, we outlined how we'd utilise this promotion alongside other social media channels such as Facebook and Pinterest to engage with the target market and ultimately drive sales.

For our Level 4 Integrated Project, I worked in a small three-person team to produce an entire digital media overhaul plan for a small Sheffield-based business called Selfix Technology (http://selfixtechnology.com). We provided thorough ideas and actionable plans of how we'd update the outdated website, produce media of various forms (photography, videography, graphics etc.) and engage with the different target audiences of the business.

I started the site, teepii.com (no longer running), to help my family members sell their products. It was a venture into the unknown for me. I wanted to help them whilst also learning about selling products online. Using what I already knew (website development) as a stepping stone, I set out to finish the site, to a reasonable standard, within a month. Initially, I didn't know where to head. What systems should I use? What's a suitable budget for someone my age? Will the products sell? The last point still stands negative, but that's not the focus here... I decided to start drawing up some business plans. Where do I want to be in a year? I wanted to keep this site up but also have the budget to start another site either wholesaling or drop-shipping. With that sorted, I did some research to determine a budget. I bought the domain, web hosting, SSL certificate and email hosting through Namecheap with a minimal cost of £20 ($31). If I could make that back in a year whilst also commissioning the family members' whose products they were, that'd see me happy. And finally, will they sell? In such a dense online world it's extremely difficult to sell anything without competition. I had no contacts, no traffic and minimal budget to promote the products on my site. I considered many possibilities including advertising and real-world promotions (posters and fairs). I decided to start some pages on social media sites. Developing the website and running the social media pages over seven months allowed me to learn a lot, however, a learning experience was all this project turned out to be. I realised that using an existing platform such as Etsy would have been a better plan from the start, and this method would have also provided us with consistent traffic from people who browse Etsy for various handmade products.
