I came to AI through curiosity, not a computer science degree.

After 4 years running a restaurant kitchen in Bruges and 7 years

owning and running a hotel, I started teaching myself machine

learning in 2026 and have spent the last 57 days building a

complete LLM fine-tuning pipeline from scratch on consumer

hardware.

That project — NeuroForge — has produced over 56 training cycles,

a working evaluation framework, and a public methodology

documenting every failure mode I encountered and what fixed it.

Most of what I know came from things going wrong.

I am not a data scientist and I won't pretend otherwise. What I

can offer is hands-on experience with QLoRA, DPO and SFT on

Llama 3.1, a practical understanding of where fine-tuning

pipelines break and why, and the discipline to document

everything properly.

I started NeuroForge in February 2026 as a personal research
project — I wanted to know whether you could build a language
model with a genuinely stable identity on consumer hardware,
not just a prompted one.

Since then, I have run over 56 training cycles on a Llama 3.1-8B
base model using QLoRA, DPO and SFT on an RTX 3070. Most of what
I learned came from things going wrong — looping, identity drift,
weight geometry collapse — and figuring out why.

I built my own evaluation framework to test stability across
cycles, and I have documented everything in a public GitHub repo
including every failure mode I encountered and what fixed it.

The project is still active. Four of the eight planned research
stages are complete.
