Les Pôles de compétitivité wallons ont été créés en 2006 dans le cadre du Plan Marshall à l'initiative du Ministre de l'Economie. Les 6 Pôles rassemblent des grandes entreprises, PME, universités, hautes écoles et centres de recherche pour mettre en œuvre des projets industriels (recherches appliquées collaboratives, investissement, formation) visant à soutenir et à créer de l'activité et de l'emploi dans des domaines neufs. Ils ont aussi comme objectif de donner une visibilité internationale plus forte à notre industrie. Les Pôles couvrent actuellement tous les secteurs de l'activité économique dans lesquels on trouve les compétences, les infrastructures, les entreprises et les centres de recherche les mieux adaptés pour créer croissance, richesse et emplois. Ils ont entrepris depuis leur création une véritable rénovation du tissu économique wallon : ils sont devenus l'axe central d'une politique industrielle wallonne de grande ampleur, avec des résultats en termes d'emplois, de créations de nouveaux produits et de services innovants, ainsi que des créations d'entreprises, la réalisation de nombreux contrats industriels et une présence très active sur les marchés et dans les réseaux internationaux. Ces trois ingrédients principaux (entreprises, formation, recherche et innovation), unis par les trois priorités que sont le partenariat, les projets communs concrets et la visibilité internationale, constituent les éléments clés des Pôles de compétitivité.
