About Millie

I have completed development edits, copy edits and proofreads for publishing houses, book packagers, authors who plan to self-publish, and authors who are going on submission to agents or traditional publishers. My favourite commercial fiction genres are romance, women’s fiction, crime and thriller, but I have a soft spot for literary fiction too. I am also interested in working on sports non-fiction, since I am a football, ice hockey and darts fanatic. I already have experience working in all these genres, so I understand each one well.

As well as having freelance experience, I also have 2.5 years’ experience as an in-house Development Editor at an award-winning publisher, Sweet Cherry, where I took over 50 books through the editorial process as a lead editor. I worked on everything from picture books to YA fiction and gained invaluable knowledge of the industry. I would love to pass this knowledge on to aspiring authors so that you can make your book a success, no matter which publishing path you choose.

I also have a BA in Creative Writing and English Literature, and I completed the Introduction to Editorial Skills course at The Publishing Training Centre so that I could train Junior Editors at Sweet Cherry.

    Freelance Editor
    January 2020 - Today (6 years and 5 months)
I am on the freelance roster for various publishing houses, such as Canelo, Hera Books, Pitch Publishing, Troubador Publishing and Crafted Content, but I also work directly with self-published authors and authors who plan to submit to agents or publishers. My experience includes fiction and non-fiction for adults and children, and I've worked on projects at various editorial stages (developmental edits, structural edits, line edits, copy edits and proofreads). I am also very adaptable to house style preferences.

    Development Editor
    June 2023 - October 2025 (2 years and 4 months)
I was the lead editor on multiple projects, both as a Junior Editor and as a Development Editor. While I specialised in middle-grade fiction and non-fiction as a lead editor, I also worked on everything from picture books to YA novels as a copy editor or proofreader. I commissioned IP and worked on author-led titles, supporting and collaborating with authors and my wider team throughout the entire publishing process.

Being a lead editor included (but was not limited to):
    • Structural and line editing
    • Proofreading
    • Liaising with authors, agents and freelance editors
    • Writing series outlines, metadata, style guides and spelling grids
    • Handling invoices and contracts
    • Scheduling and assignment of tasks

Other tasks at Sweet Cherry included (but were not limited to):
    • Copy editing or proofreading
    • Completing sign-offs and approving plotters
    • Audiobook proof listening
    • Pitching new projects in acquisition meetings
    • Working on licensed projects (e.g. Numberblocks)
    • Training junior editors
    • Occasionally writing in-house IP for younger readers Sweet

    Freelance Writer
    September 2024 - Today (1 year and 9 months)
As a freelance writer, I was commissioned to complete the Hockey Legends ten-book set for Sweet Cherry. I also adapted four Greatest Football Stars titles and one Football Rising Stars title for Every Cherry (a SEND-focused imprint). Gaining this experience allowed me to fully understand what it is like for writers on the other side of the publishing process, allowing me to support them better as an editor.
