Experience
- St. Peter's SchoolCreating Can SatelliteCIVIL ENGINEERINGSeptember 2025 - April 2026 (7 months)Barcelona, SpainDuring our CanSat project, our team designed and developed a miniature satellite system capable of collecting, transmitting, and storing environmental data during flight. The objective of the project was to simulate a real aerospace mission by integrating electronics, sensors, wireless communication, 3D design, and programming into a compact CanSat structure. Our system used an ESP32 microcontroller combined with a BMP280 sensor to measure atmospheric pressure, temperature, and estimated altitude. We also implemented a radiofrequency communication system using NRF24 modules, allowing telemetry data to be transmitted wirelessly to a Ground Station in real time. In addition, the CanSat was equipped with an SD card module to store flight data locally for later analysis. The mechanical structure of the CanSat was fully designed in CAD software and manufactured using 3D printing. The project required careful optimization of internal space in order to fit the electronics, battery, parachute system, and sensors inside the CanSat while maintaining stability and accessibility.Throughout the project, we worked on multiple engineering disciplines simultaneously, including electronics integration, sensor calibration, telemetry systems, embedded programming, and structural design. We also faced and solved real-world technical challenges such as unstable radio communication, cable management limitations, and hardware debugging. This experience allowed us to develop practical skills in aerospace engineering, rapid prototyping, teamwork, and technical problem solving under deadlines. The project also strengthened our abilities in documentation, presentation, and collaborative project management. The CanSat project was an excellent introduction to real engineering workflows and demonstrated how hardware, software, and mechanical systems must work together successfully in aerospace applications.
